Bobby mayer commitment to youth honoree
The Bobby Mayer Commitment to Youth Award was created after the untimely death of Bobby Mayer, New Trier social worker and former Harbour Board member. It is given annually to an individual who embodies the values of service to youth and commitment to others.
Alexis Del Campo Eyler has dedicated her time to others ever since she was a child. Babysitting, aiding special needs students, serving as a job coach and coaching Special Olympic student athletes all prepared Alexis for a lifetime of volunteering.
Alexis went to college at Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City. She worked as a high school tutor in French, English, and Biology, as well as volunteering her time tutoring university students in her beloved French. During her breaks home from college, Alexis worked at The Cradle, the country’s only remaining adoption agency with an onsite nursery, where she cared for babies frequently born of drug and alcohol addicted mothers.
Upon graduation, she married fellow New Trier and Columbia University graduate Craig Eyler, and lived in New York City, where her commitment to volunteerism continued to thrive.
Upon moving back to the Chicago area in 2003, the couple soon became the parents of three young children. Alexis still found time to give to area youth,
serving on The Harbour’s Board of Directors, and becoming deeply involved at Lincoln Elementary School, where she progressed from a classroom volunteer to PTA president. Recently, Alexis helped launch a pen pal program for Lincoln’s 5th graders with a school in Zanzibar through the organization Opportunity Education. With encouragement from her husband, Alexis picked up road cycling in 2011 and has twice completed the 100 mile Wrigley Field Road Tour benefitting World Bicycle Relief, raising several thousand dollars for the organization in the process.
Excited to combine her passion for music and love of children, Alexis recently joined the Board of Directors of The People's Music School, the only program to offer completely free music education to children in the Chicago metropolitan area, where she will chair their development committee.
