Volunteer Spotlight, January 2016
Sean Willett - Young Professionals board Chairman
Thank you, Sean, for your dedication to our mission!
January's Helping Hands Club inductee is Sean Willett, Chairman of The Harbour's Young Professionals Board.
Sean is changing the perception of youth homelessness one day at a time.
Sean came to The Harbour in 2013 when a friend invited him to participate in a volunteer day our shelter. What started as a day cleaning up the shelter turned into a bigger project. Sean, along with a few friends, came up with an idea for young professionals to get involved on an on-going basis with The Harbour. In 2013, The Harbour created a Young Professionals Board, an auxiliary board to the Board of Directors designated purely for young professionals to get involved in their communities and help end youth homelessness in Illinois.
"Youth homelessness has a perception of being an “inner-city” problem, when the reality is that it affects even the most affluent neighborhoods. It is important to me that organizations, like The Harbour, get the proper support to help end youth homelessness in the community where I grew up. I want to ensure that the clients of The Harbour are afforded the same opportunities I had in my youth because these children are the future leaders of my community." -Sean
Since its inception in late 2013, the Young Professionals Board has grown its membership and hosted several small fundraisers. The board also hosts volunteer opportunities for the public, volunteers at Harbour events and hosts activities for Harbour clients. Recent events the Young Professionals Board have hosted include Raise the Roof (March 2015), Chopped Chef (November 2015) and Holiday House Decorating Competition (December 2015).
"The best part of being on the board is getting to interact with the clients. With every event we have, I am continually amazed at the skills, passion and potential of the clients. I recently helped judge a “Chopped”-style cooking competition where the clients got the chance to show off their cooking abilities and I was blown-away by their culinary skills!" -Sean
Though it is early in the year, there are several events and volunteer opportunities on the Young Professionals Board calendar. For more information about the Young Professionals Board, please contact Rosie at email@example.com.
